Existing Features

The garden was fairly overgrown with areas of lawn, large hedges and shrub borders enclosing the house together with a neglected pond. There were also a number of mature trees dotted throughout the site.

The House

This Georgian farmhouse had been extended and modified over the years. The client wanted their new garden to provide them with distinct outdoor living spaces, including a lawn area for their children and views out into the countryside. More importantly, they wanted their new landscape to be sympathetic to and harmonise with their gorgeous country house.

A garden Full of Texture

The planting borders situated near the house were full of colour, texture, and scent, providing interest throughout the year. As the garden moved away from the house and eased into the landscape beyond, the planting simplified. 



We rejuvenated the pond, sculptures were positioned as focal points around the garden to direct the eye and the boundaries of the garden were delineated using classic estate railings.

Interlinking Seating Areas

Using traditional York stone, we created a number of interlinked seating areas where the client could enjoy the sun at any time of the day as it moved around the house. The main terrace was designed to be an extension of the kitchen and dining area. We also created a larger, more open space leading away from the house to views of the landscape beyond.

The proposed designs included a new sweeping driveway as part of the approach to the house. Framed by an avenue of trees, it reflected the house’s architectural style and provided a suitable space for parking.

Why I Loved Working on this Design

This was a beautiful house and location. It was a real delight to be able to breathe energy and life back into the forgotten garden and pond once again, just as the renovation project had accomplished with the house previously. 



I particularly enjoy projects that balance the requirements of modern living with traditional properties and rural locations. In this instance, borrowing from such a beautiful landscape helped inspire me to create this stunning garden.
