Suffolk Farmhouse

Surrounded by open fields, the farmhouse’s three acre garden sits on one of the highest points in Suffolk.  The old garden was heavily partitioned with numerous conifer hedges which dominated the space.  There was an old pond close to the house which lead out to an open paddock beyond, but the garden just felt claustrophobic and disjointed.

Our client’s brief was to open the garden up and create a flow from house to the beautiful agricultural landscape beyond; taking advantage of the rolling Suffolk landscape.

The design created a series of interlinked spaces such as the swimming pool garden, pond garden and arboretum but avoided using large, heavy dividing blocks of planting to keep an open feel.  We chose plants to blend harmoniously with the nearby fields of wheat and barley, so the use of perennials and especially grasses was key.  The planting not only provided colour but also movement and sound, as the plants caught the gentle summer breeze.

It was important for my client to enjoy a sense of peace, restfulness and relaxation in the garden and we created a number of seating areas each with its own character through the new design.  These spaces offered sunshine or shade a various times of the day and always afforded a view either out into the countryside or within the garden from one ‘room’ to another.
